External Apostolic Oblates
Who are we?
An
Apostolic Oblate is one and the same vocation, but with different
expressions. She is a vowed woman for the purpose of a total dedication and
availability to the apostolate of the Universal Call to Holiness and goals
of the Institute. Through her vows of poverty, chastity, and
obedience and the promise of apostolate, the Oblate is totally free for
service to people and to the Institute.
An External
Oblate lives on her own and carries on a career, working in and through
social structures, especially with her social profession and family.
She is totally committed through her permanent vows and promise of
apostolate. An Internal Oblate while sharing in the same charism and
vowed life is called to be available to the needs of the Institute and
lives in small community
“A profound interior life
leads
the Oblates
to a
continual union with God.
The
mission of the Oblates is to promote
the
universal call to holiness
and
encourage people to deepen
Their
interior life.”
Servant of God, Bishop G.
Giaquinta, Founder

To what end?
Members of a
Secular Institute live within the secular world; dedicate their lives to
God through vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, who by living in the
world promote the message of the universal call of holiness for all people.
The Gospel puts forward the ideal of the consecration of the person, that
is, the person’s exclusive dedication to do by virtue of the evangelical
counsels: in particular, chastity, poverty, and obedience. Their
perfect incarnation is Jesus Christ himself, Whoever wishes to follow him
in a radical way chooses to live according to the counsels.(MD20)
Holy
women are an incarnation of the feminine ideal; they are also a model for
all Christians, a model of the “sequela Christi’, an example of how
the Bride must respond with love to the love of the Bridegroom. (27)
Thus
the ‘perfect woman’ becomes an irreplaceable support and source of
spiritual strength for other people, who perceive the great energies of her
spirit.(cf. Prov 31:10)
The
Commitment to the Evangelical Counsels is not required until after a person
is very sure that this is her call. A time for friendship,
discernment, and formation help guide each person through her call to a
vocation. This discernment necessitates that a women begin her
formation before the age of 45, although exceptions can be made.
